Those of you who have followed Kakofon for a while, may still remember the “glory days” of the first little Wordpress blog. You may even remember the “Hemingway-period”, when things started to get out of hand. Maybe you got confused when, one day, the site was completely missing for the first time in a couple of years? That’s when “v5.0″ was born, the xml-driven flash site that’s currently serving as Kakofon’s online presence. (Not that there’s much of an offline one yet, I know. It’ll come a day…)
So now you’re probably thinking: “Hey, hasn’t Christer sworn off Wordpress at least twice now? So what the hell is this thing doing here?”. True, I have tried to move on from WP a couple of times. The first time was when I got fed up and decided to move everything to Flash, the other was after I gave up the ludicrous idea of using WP as a backend for the flash site. It worked, but in the same way a pedal-powered airplane works - you sweat more than the flight is worth, and it’s a bit wobbly.
Yet I keep coming back to good ol’ Wordpress. The flash site has grown into more of a showcase, as I for some reason begun to feel I had to make things shiny and nice to present it there. At the same time, Flickr became my blogging outlet, where I could post unfinished and experimental stuff without worrying too much about the quality. It wasn’t before my tutor Mosse said she thought I wasn’t blogging actively enough that I realized how much I missed having a blog like the old one; sharing sketches, posting thoughts and building a library of links to inspirational websites, images and videos.
I have been trying to choose between Flash and Wordpress, I have tried to force them to work together, but not until recently have I finally understood that the best solution for me is to just keep them apart and use them for different things. The flash site is great as a portfolio and showcase of finished projects, while nothing beats a simple blog for documenting the processes of how one gets there.
I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before, as I’ve seen so many good examples of other designers doing it like that online! A slight case of YouBris 2.0™ clouding my vision, perhaps?
Who cares - welcome to the new blog.
